We Are More Than Just a Shop!
As the official distributor of Headway Oceanguard you can always call on Reikon for the maintenance of these ballast water treatment systems.
F.A.Q.
The principles of electrocatalysis and electrolysis are ballast water treatment technologies in which chlorine is used as a cleaning product (electrocatalysis) or as a by-product (electrolysis). A reagent is used to monitor the chlorine. In addition, these systems use sodium thiosulfate to neutralize the chlorine. These essential consumables can be ordered with one click on this webshop!
Sodium Thiosulfate
For which systems do you use these products?
Sodium Thiosulfate is used for neutralizing chloride that is released during electrolysis and electrocatalysis systems. These include the ballast water treatment systems from Headway, Techcross, Erma First, Sunrui, Samsung, Wärsilä and Hyundai.
How Much Sodium Thiosulfate Do I Need?
How much Sodium Thiosulfate is consumed depends on the type of system and the period of deballasting after ballasting. Electrocatalysis systems produce less chloride, which means that it decays more quickly in the tank and therefore has to be neutralized less often. Electrolysis produces more chloride and it therefore remains longer.
Is Sodium Thiosulfate a Hazardous Substances / Chemicals?
Sodium Thiosulfate is a kind of salt that is not harmful. Avoid contact with eyes, nose and mouth.
Do I have to use special gloves when refilling the Sodium Thiosulfate?
No it is not mandatory to wear special gloves, but it is recommended.
Why does an electrolysis system consume more Sodium Thiosulfate than an electrocatalysis system?
For electrolysis systems, a lot of chloride is produced to kill the micro-organisms in the water. Electrocatalysis uses free radicals (OH⁻ particles) to clean the water. As a result, the TRO value (chlorine content) during electrolysis operation is a lot higher than with electrocatalysis. Chlorine neutralizes after a few hours in the tank. With a low TRO value, such as the electrocatalysis system, this is done within 24 hours and no more neutralization is required. With electrolysis systems this takes longer and will therefore have to be neutralized more often and more.
Chlorine Kit
For which systems do you use these products?
The TRO reagent kit is used to measure chloride. This happens with electrolysis and electrocatalysis systems. These include the ballast water treatment systems from Headway, Techcross, Erma First, Sunrui, Samsung, Wärsilä and Hyundai.
How many kits do I need?
1 kit per year. An annual kit consists of 1 large bottle of Total Residual Oxident Buffer, 4 quarter jars with Total Residual Oxident Indicator and 4 sticks with DPD powder.
Why does BWMS Shop offer 4 jars of TRO reagent in an annual kit? I only use 1 per year.
Once the DPD powder has been added to the jar with indicator, it has a shelf life of 3 months. A new jar will therefore have to be used every quarter.
The liquid from the monitoring unit turns pink, is it allowed in the bilge?
The reagent reacts with chlorine in the TRO meter. The redder the liquid, the more chlorine. This runs from the measuring unit to the bilge and can be overboard via the bilge water cleaner.
